Free Income Tax Assistance for Households Earning Less Than $49,000

This year’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program launches January 23 at 18 sites throughout Northern Virginia. Locally known as the Northern Virginia CASH Campaign – Creating Assets, Savings and Hope – the program offers free tax preparation services to working families and individuals who earned less than $49,000 in 2009.

Last year’s VITA program in Northern Virginia resulted in tax refunds of over $4.4 million for low-income families and individuals. A local coalition of public agencies, businesses, libraries, faith and community-based groups operates the program, which is coordinated by Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services.

Starting January 23, 2010, and running through April 2010, IRS certified volunteers at 18 sites in Northern Virginia will help make sure that low-income families and individuals receive the maximum tax refund to which they are entitled and help determine if they are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

“This service is so important because it informs people about the Earned Income Tax Credit and other assistance that may be available to help them afford basic necessities such as rent and food,” said Dai Nguyen, Employment and Training Program manager for the Fairfax County Department of Family Services.

People seeking tax preparation assistance should bring the following:
• Photo ID
• Social Security cards and birthdates for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents.
• If married and filing a joint return, both spouses must be present.
• Wage and earnings statements: W-2, W-2G, and all Form 1099's received.
• Unemployment compensation, Form 1099G.
• Interest and dividend statements.
• Day care expenses paid in 2009 and the day care provider’s name, address and federal ID number.
• Student loan interest payments.
• Record tuition or student loan payments, 1098-E.
• A copy of last year’s federal and state returns.
• Record of any Sales Tax paid on new vehicles purchased in 2009.
