Voice of Vietnamese Americans’ Statement in Support of the Passage and Enactment of the Health Care Reform Legislation of 2010

FAIRFAX, V.A. – Voice of Vietnamese Americans (VVA) released today the following statement in support of the historic health care reform legislation passed by the House of Representatives on March 21, 2010 and signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010:

“Voice of Vietnamese Americans strongly supports the passage and swift enactment of the historic federal legislation that reforms this country’s health care system and ends insurance company abuses. By making health care services more affordable and accessible, this new law of the land fulfills the promise of expanding access to health care for all Vietnamese Americans.

“VVA is proud of the expansion of benefits that will immediately impact all Americans, regardless of ethnic background. Countless Vietnamese Americans migrated to the United States to start a new beginning under the values and principles upon which this great nation was built, such as the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. This new law honors America’s historic values and traditions.

“The new law prevents insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions and from dropping a client because he or she gets sick. Many Vietnamese Americans who suffer Hepatitis B, which is considered as a pre-existing condition and also the number one cause of liver cancer for Asian Americans, will now not have to worry about losing their coverage. The new law will also immediately benefit the many elderly Vietnamese Americans who rely on Medicare as it strengthens its services and cuts prescriptions costs.

“Importantly, this new law will reduce this country’s deficit by over $140 billion over the next ten years, putting no burden on our future generations of Vietnamese Americans.

“VVA stands in firm support of the new law. It will help Vietnamese Americans to live longer, healthier lives, thereby giving them more opportunities to pursue the American dream.”
