States with high concentration of Vietnamese Americans such as California, Texas, Washington State, Virginia, is slowing down in our participation rate, only about 67% - 72%, while many other states are leading at above 80%.

WE NEED A PUSH TO RAISE THE VIETNAMESE AMERICANS' PARTICIPATION RATE!

CALLING ALL VOICE OF VIETNAMESE AMERICANS MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS TO TALK TO AT LEAST 10 CONTACTS TO PROMOTE CENSUS 2010 NATIONWIDE.

TO VVA MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS IN FAIRFAX - MARCH TO THE MAILBOX ON APRIL 10TH:

Hello all,

Here is another opportunity to volunteer with Census this Saturday, April 10, 2010. We will be joining other volunteers from around the community this day to "March to the Mailbox" and remind households to send back their forms, for a few hours in the afternoon. Below is information from Van-Anh Nguyen who is coordinating this event. It will be nice to walk and help our state get counted in the Census! We will be walking in pairs or small groups. You can call me for any questions (703) 362-7873. Please reply to me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE -- so we can let Van-Anh know how many t-shirts, water bottles, etc. we need.

What: March to the Mailbox Campaign
What is it?! Basically, this is a campaign by the U.S. Census Bureau in which organizations and their volunteers are assigned a tract number (a designated neighborhood area) where there is a low Census response rate. So, for example, the current average VA response rate is 62%. Yet, in this specific neighborhood, the response rate may be in the low 30s. That means about 7 out of 10 people living there still haven’t mail back their Census form. Our job is to go to this neighborhood on April 10th and do door-to-door (mostly apartments) reminding people about the Census. We’ll be passing out fliers and whatever else we want. Census Bureau is providing all volunteers w/ special T-Shirts, bags, stainless steel water bottles, signs, etc.

When: Saturday, April 10, 2010. 1-5pm

Where: Census Tract 4221 (few townhome neighborhoods in Lorton, VA). You will need a car to drive here. If you are interested, but don’t have a ride, please let me know.

Why: Because for every person not counted, we are losing about $1000 each year for the next 10 years to help our community build schools, libraries, etc. And since this neighborhood has such a low response rate, we need to ensure they get counted!

Who: The more the merrier! We need at least 10 volunteers to do this. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider joining us for the afternoon! It will be fun
