VOICE OF VIETNAMESE AMERICANS APPLAUDS PRESIDENT OBAMA
FOR THE NOMINATION OF JUDGE JACQUELINE NGUYEN
TO THE FEDERAL APPELLATE COURT

Washington, D.C:
Voice of Vietnamese Americans applauds President Obama for his nomination of Judge Jacqueline H. Nguyen to the Federal Appellate Court on September 22, 2011.

“Judge Nguyen has been a trailblazer, displaying an outstanding commitment to public service throughout her career,” President Obama said. “I am honored to nominate her today for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals and confident she will serve the American people with fairness and integrity.”

If confirmed, Judge Nguyen would become the first Asian Pacific American woman in the history of the United States to serve as a federal appellate court judge and only the second Asian Pacific American federal appellate court judge currently in active service nationwide. Voice of Vietnamese Americans urges Congress to confirm Judge Jacqueline Nguyen to the deserved position where she can better serve our nation.

“We are very proud of Judge Jacqueline Nguyen, a Vietnamese American who shares our cultural background, understands our language, lives our historical challenges as refugees searching for freedom and democracy ...” said Genie Nguyen, President of Voice of Vietnamese Americans, “Judge Nguyen will bring justice to underserved citizens and voice to refugees and immigrants.”

Judge Nguyen was born in South Vietnam, to the family of a South Vietnamese Army major. She escaped the fall of South Vietnam in a harrowing trip through a chaotic Saigon, to the Philippines, to Guam, and eventually, to Camp Pendleton, California. Judge Nguyen embraced her new life in America with grace, fortitude, determination and cheerful modesty. Growing up, she assisted her mother in cleaning dental offices and earned a four-year full tuition scholarship to Occidental College. Nguyen graduated from UCLA School of Law, while continuing to help her mother in the family donut shop on the weekends.

Voice of Vietnamese Americans commends President Obama for his astute nomination, and thanks Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Barbara Boxer for their support of Judge Nguyen's nomination.

Voice of Vietnamese Americans congratulates Judge Jacqueline Nguyen on her achievements illuminated by the historic nomination and wishes her all the best.
